MEET ROBERTA

Hi! Thank you for being interested in knowing more about me. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Florida. I hold a master's degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Utah, multiple certifications in infant mental health, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), perinatal mood disorders, child-parent psychotherapy, and Circle of Security.

I'm passionate about child mental health and find it delightful to connect with children and families! Each child and family have unique life events and experiences that shape their way of seeing the world. I have a reflective, playful, and supportive therapeutic style while establishing a safe space for children and families to express their truths in their own way.

As a professional in the mental health field who dedicated my career to learning early childhood development, I witness the harmful impact of adversities on a regular basis. I’m honored to have crossed paths with families and children of all backgrounds and ages, as young as three months old. Being in the field of child mental health for over a decade, I have observed that many of the young children who face early childhood adversities are often later misdiagnosed with ADHD, learning disorders, oppositional defiant disorder, and more. They’re often labeled as attention-seekers, troublemakers, or out-of-control children, hiding the core reason communicated by their behaviors. I wholeheartedly believe children behave well when they can and they feel safe when all their feelings are welcomed. I believe that children have legitimate needs and their behavior is their way of communicating those needs.

I came to realize that, although adversities happen to all of us, their impact varies from one person to another. Combining my curious learning style with knowledge of child mental health, I’m grateful and humbled to say that each child and family have helped me better understand how to help others. I’m a firm believer that, no matter what therapeutic orientation, degree, or certification you have, we can’t aim to change what we don’t yet understand; our experiences (good and bad) shape our views, our responses, and the way we relate to others in the world.
